Southampton vs Arsenal Preview: Un-saintly Saints

Top of the day Gooners, certain we are all set to have a great day. How much can we get into this preview in 30minutes before the boss calls, let’s find out together. The entire buzz around the club now is about the PUMA deal yesterday and sadly I couldn’t follow most of it but would get across to doing so today.

The best thing about social media is that feeling of inclusiveness that it gives you irrespective of location. Many years ago when we started watching Arsenal how much info would we have gotten about an event like yesterdays. With Twitter all you need to do is follow the clubs official account, a few journalists and some big arsenal fans accounts like @DarrenArsenal1, @fkhanage, @AllenSport ,@timpayton etc and you are certain to get almost minute by minute details of events that are going on with great individual analysis of the event and if you missed most of it live like me I guess we can be certain the likes of Tim Stillman on Arseblog.com would have as always a very incisive report on the deal.

A little on the match today as time is not my friend obviously, we play Southampton away and they have been a side that have had some sort of a pendulum season thus far, blowing hot and cold at different times and hopefully they will be on the blowing cold patch today. Currently embroiled ‘un-saintly’off the pitch affairs with Pablo Daniel Osvaldo still suspended following a training-ground incident all the headlines have moved from how good they were early season to how they can salvage what is left of their season.

Early season form has always proved to be a false indicator many times in the premiership and experience always counts at the tail end hence the reason many cant still write United off from the chase for a Top four (write United off from a top four chase rather than Title chase….boy that felt good to write) we have seen runs from clubs like Hull, Swansea, West Brom , Newcastle and even Spurs try to threaten the establishment and they always end up failing when push comes to shove.

Southampton will be without Dejan Lovren and Gaston Ramirez (both ankle) remain sidelined,Rickie Lambert (hamstring) and Artur Boruc (back) are expected to return and Victor Wanyama (calf) could feature for the first time since early last month. The price of success for sides like Southampton is a steep one as you celebrate with one hand and expect that the big boys in the league come with cash to steal your players as we can expect Chelsea and United to make bids for left back Luke Shaw during this window or the summer, Lallana should he make it to the world cup is another that might not remain at the club next season.

With Arsenal we have no other option but keep running our current script as the league this season is not giving any margin for error. The game at Southampton last season was very close and we only managed a point at that ground from an own goal so the manager would sure have reminded everyone of the job required today. You would think with all the PUMA unveiling yesterday the players would not be distracted and would firmly have their minds focused on getting the 3 points required today and extend our lead at the top to 4 points albeit temporarily.

We have Ramsey, Arteta, Vermaelen and Rosicky back for this game and it just goes to show the strength in depth we have in our midfield that we really haven’t missed anyone as much as we would have in seasons past. Wilshere is carrying a knock and we would expect him not to play which means Ramsey can walk right back on to the pitch but we know Wenger to be cautious with returning players and he might play Oxlade in the centre alongside Ozil as he did against Coventry or Rosicky could fill in too. Podolski after his brace in our FA Cup game most likely would return to the bench for Santi Cazorla but I feel Wenger can deploy Podli and Santi on either side of Giroud Gnarby can always join the game from the bench.

Five more minutes, phew! Should make for a good encounter tonight so I guess I’ll have to end here. Have yourselves a great day at work or school or anything you are doing. Keep the Canon in your heart.
