Hello, how are you? I was wondering if I could introduce you to another awesome Gooner, @LeyeAkinola who features on our Arsenal Fan of the Week Page. Leye is really incisive in this debates and opinions about Arsenal which possibly must have been borne out of perpetual arguments with his Man United loving twin.
A fan since 2002, Leye has spent the last 13 years singing his heart out to the Gunners and his responses below show his in-depth affection for the club. Let’s meet him.
Full name Akinleye Akinola. Born in Lagos. Hail from Ekiti. @LeyeAkinola. In a family of 5. I’m a twin (my twin bro supports Utd how I allowed that to happen I’ll never know!) A graduate of English at the University of Jos. A banker and an avid lover of Sports and music.
Q. When did you start supporting the club?
A. May 2002, FA cup final. I remember going to a friend’s house and we were actually watching a movie and I think her elder brother bumped in and switched channels, turns out to be that final, beautiful summers day in Cardiff and Arsenal put Chelsea to the sword that day. The rest is history
Q. What attracted you to the club?
A. Well, had to be the way Arsenal played that final, the style of play was something I had never seen in my life and I was like, I love this team!
Q. Who is your favourite all time Arsenal player?
A. Hmmm, tough one. Arsene has blessed us with so many great players. I could say Henry (basically because he is Thierry Henry!) Dennis Bergkamp comes close (think abt that genius of a goal at Newcastle). But my Favourite player has to be Robert Pires. I am lucky to have seen him play at his peak, circa 2002-2005. He was awesome in full flow.
Q. Who is your current favourite player in the team?
A. Santi Carzola. Nothing else to add!
Q. Your worst Arsenal signing?
A. Silvestre? Just awful and how about Amary Bischoff. Not sure I ever saw him play.
Q. If you could sign one player to join Arsenal who would it be? (no Messi or Ronaldo)
A. Easy to go for finished articles like Neymar etc but I really love what I see in Anthony Martial. That boy frightens me. He’s got it all. So sad he plays for that team
Q. If you had one ticket to watch Arsenal against any other team which team would you pick?
A. Tottenham . Just to feel that Derby atmosphere. U can feel the intensity in the crowd just watching at home.
Q. Your all time worst Arsenal game?
A. That Utd 8-2 comes to my mind but for me that game at St. Andrews in 2008 where Eduardo broke his leg has to be my worst. No doubt we would have won that title if not for Gael’s moment of madness
Q. Your all-time favourite Arsenal game?
A. So many great goals. So many. Jack Wilshere v Norwich comes to mind now. Orgasmic!
Q. Your most memorable Arsenal goal?
A. This may sound weird but that 0-0 at Old Trafford in 2003. With Van Nistelrooy missing that pen(God I hated that fella then ) So much joy that day . And it protected what turned out to be an unbeaten season.
Q. Do you prefer individual goals or team worked goals?
A. Anyone would do
Q. If you could relegate one Premier League team who would it be?
A. Has to be Man United. I hate them. Nuff said
Q. What is your strangest Arsenal story?
A. When we signed Silvestre. I was like wtf.
Q. If you could reverse one Arsenal result which would it be? (Apart from the Champions League Final)
A. Will go back to that Birmingham game in 2008. We win that game we win the league. That game coupled with Eduardo’s unfortunate injury wrecked our season.
Q. If you were on the Titanic that also had Arsenal players on it, and you had access to take just one Arsenal player with on the last available life boat with you would you pick and why?
A. Hmmm, tough choice. Mesut Ozil. His talent is just unreal and who wants to see Ozil die in Arctic conditions? Me neither.
Q. In one word, how would you describe your relationship with Arsenal?
A. Bittersweet. So much Joy and pain and I will ALWAYS come back for more again and again and again…..
